A monthly calendar gives each month its own page, with cells big enough to write in. A yearly calendar puts all twelve months on one sheet: you do not write on it, but you can see the year at a glance, which is what you want for looking up a date or checking school holidays. Plenty of people print both — the year on the wall, the current month on the desk.

Monthly calendar or monthly planner?
