Graph paper, also known as grid paper, squared paper, or gridded paper, is an essential tool for students, engineers, and designers. With our free online generator — a square grid maker you can edit before printing rather than a fixed template — you can create your own custom graph paper as a PDF and print it directly.
Whether you need finely divided graph paper for technical drawings, standard grid paper for math assignments, or flexible squared paper for creative projects – our generator offers all the options you need.
While these terms are often used interchangeably, there are subtle differences in their applications:
With our tool, you can customize any variant to match your specific needs – whether for school, university, or technical projects!

Our generator offers maximum flexibility:
Every graph paper here is generated from the form above, so a custom sheet is one setting away: any square size from 1 mm to 4 cm or 1/10 in to 2 in, heavier lines every 5 or 10 squares, a margin line, a line colour, Letter, A4, A3, A5 or Legal, and up to ten pages per file. Download it as a PDF to print or as a PNG to drop into a document. There is no sign-up and no watermark. Begin with the 1/4 inch Letter grid.
Regional names for one thing. In India it is a graph sheet, and it is what gets asked for in physics and maths practicals; in North America grid paper, ; in the UK, squared paper. The 1 cm and 5 mm rulings below cover almost every school and college requirement, and they print at exact size so a measured drawing stays measured.
Printing your own is also the cheapest way to get an A4 graph sheet when you need one page and the shop sells twenty. Download the 5 mm A4 graph sheet.
Quarter-inch squares at a scale of 1 square = 1 foot. That is the convention architects' sketch pads use, and it fits a 40 × 30 ft floor on one Letter sheet with room for labels. A heavier line every 4 squares marks 4 ft, so you can count a 12 ft room at a glance instead of square by square. Draw walls on the heavy lines where you can, measure doors and furniture in squares, and keep a scale note on the sheet so anyone reading the plan knows what a square means.
Our floor-plan sheet has the heavier 4 ft lines and the scale already printed: floor plan graph paper, ¼ inch.
For optimal printing results with graph paper and grid paper, we recommend:
No. A grid or ruling drawn as a table in Word changes size when it prints, because Word scales the page to your printer margins — so the spacing you set is not the spacing you get. The PDF here is fixed at the size you chose, which is the whole point of downloading one.
Yes — download it as a transparent PNG and insert it as a picture or page background. Word, Google Docs and Slides all take it, and the spacing stays exactly as you set it here.
We'll send this exact configuration so you can print it again without setting it up.
One email with your PDF. No account, and no other emails ever — unless you tick the box.
Someone else probably needs the same page — a classmate, your kids, a colleague.
